From buildings to boards: A career reinvented

Dev Halai's journey

Rewriting the blueprint: Dev’s journey into Embedded Systems

Before stepping into the world of embedded systems, Dev Halai was working in architecture as a BIM/CAD Specialist. Although experienced in design and modelling software, Dev knew he wanted something more hands-on, dynamic, and rooted in technology. That opportunity came when he attended a talk by WithYouWithMe’s Paula Ashe and his career trajectory changed.

Initially aiming for a software role through WithYouWithMe, Dev completed the testing scoring exceptionally across all key cognitive and reasoning categories.

His scores indicate that Dev has a highly analytical mind, excellent problem-solving ability, and can easily work with complex systems, all of which are essential for firmware development, especially when working with low-level hardware interactions. This opened up a new opportunity he had never even heard of and despite not having a traditional engineering background, he dove into WithYouWithMe’s firmware training pathway, balancing self-learning modules with live instructor-led sessions.

“It wasn’t always easy, but it opened a completely different field for me. One I would never have had access to otherwise,” he shares.

New role, new horizons

Dev is now thriving as a Firmware Engineer at Leonardo, having successfully navigated the interview process by demonstrating not just technical knowledge, but the motivation and adaptability that characterise high-potential candidates.

His goal? To grow within the firmware space, deepen his understanding of system-level design, and keep building on this new foundation.

For Dev, the “potential over experience” model wasn’t just helpful, it was essential.

“It’s the way hiring should be. People have transferable skills, are willing to learn, and often bring more diverse perspectives into a role. If you only ever hire the same type of person, how can you expect new ideas?”
