What is the Australian Skills Guarantee?

The Skills Guarantee is an Australian Government initiative developed by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to boost the nation’s skills by creating more entry-level employment opportunities on large-scale Commonwealth Information and Communications Technology (ICT) projects.

The initiative is designed to address skills shortages in the ICT sector and drive sustainable change by providing apprentices, trainees and cadets with on-the-job training for digital roles.

How does the Australian Skills Guarantee Procurement Connected Policy work?

The Skills Guarantee Procurement Connected Policy calls for all major Government ICT projects where the expected value is 10 million dollars or above to ensure an agreed percentage of labour hours spent on the project are undertaken by apprentice, trainee or cadet workforces. The Skills Guarantee also outlines additional overarching and trade specific targets for women to increase each year.

Organisations wishing to procure contracts for major projects will need an effective mechanism in place to rapidly identify and engage entry-level ICT talent to contribute to project delivery.
