What brought you to WithYouWithMe?

I have always had a keen interest in technology and process improvement. At the peak of my military career, I led an army-wide supply chain automation project as the Senior Project Manager, aiming to automate re-supply functions across 145 locations and $1.8B of stock.

At the time of my transition, I was introduced to WithYouWithMe by veteran friends who had received exceptional support and training on their journey to civilian life. Luckily for me, WYWM Robotics had just been launched and was developing itself into a centre of expertise for Robotic Process Automation (RPA) training and consulting. My experience in engineering and project management, coupled with a passion for seeing veterans succeed made the role a perfect fit for me. When it was offered I leapt at the chance.

What is so special about Robotic Process Automation (RPA)?

RPA is the design and implementation of software or a “robot” at specific points in a processes to make it more effective and efficient. RPA works because “Robots” are better (and faster) at repetitive, rule-based tasks, whereas humans are more effective at thinking and reasoning tasks.

In my opinion, RPA is a stepping stone, or early iteration towards true machine learning and automation, which will redefine our lives over the 10+ years. The Australian RPA industry is set to grow to $870M by 2020 and 38% of larger organisations (over 500 employees) in Australia are already running RPA programs, while 60% are investigating the opportunities on offer (Source: Telsyte, 2017). There has never been a better time to get into RPA and be part of the new digital age.

What key piece of advice do you have for other veterans currently transitioning from the ADF into the civilian workplace?

Transitioning out of the Defence Force can be a daunting decision and can leave you feeling uncertain about the future. Most recruiting companies I dealt with during my transition only offered to place me into roles very similar to what I had done in uniform. For many veterans this is a great option, but don’t be afraid to try something new as it is a good opportunity to re-invent yourself. You joined the military because you are passionate about your job, make sure you are passionate about your next career move!

What do you like about working for WithYouWithMe?

Working at WithYouWithMe reminds me every day that what I do is making a real difference. Every day we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on a veteran’s life, and make a positive impact on Australian industry by providing another talented, motivated and capable employee. So just like in the military, WithYouWithMe enables me to do something that I believe in.
